TIN Arts were commissioned by South Tess Creative Health to pilot an intergenerational dance project.

The project goals were to:

  • Reduce social isolation and improve mental wellbeing.
  • Improve physical and mental health and wellbeing through regular dance activities.
  • Improve relationships and break down barriers between generations.

The working name of the project was Tiny TINs.  Tiny TINs is a fun movement to music class early years children (aged two to four) and a grown-up.  All who attend take part together and the aim is to create a fun, nurturing environment where children get to take their first ‘dance steps’ alongside a parent or other caregiver.

Tiny TINs sessions are designed to promote access to positive play and physical activity whilst supporting families to take part in fun creative activities together.  Activities involve movement to music, games and stories guided by the dance artist leading the session.  Each session will have a theme such as autumn, the farm or the Gruffalo.

Sessions were  delivered by Tees Valley-based artists weekly from November 2022 to March 2023 in two schools: Thorntree Academy in Middlesbrough and Whale Hill Primary School in Redcar and Cleveland.
