Leading the way in Inclusive Dance

Who is ‘First steps’ for?

  • Young people with a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND)
  • Young people with an Emotional or Social Difficulty (ESD)
  • Young people who are withdrawn or anxious about engaging in activity

What is ‘First steps’ about?

First steps is an exciting new programme, aimed at young people who are NEET (aged 16-24yrs), all about building confidence and offering individuals new methods to communicate their abilities and strengths.

The programme is suitable for a wide range of abilities as it uses a broad range of different creative approaches from verbal or written tasks through to physical moving games.  Although creative activities are used throughout the sessions, young people do not have to have an interest or passion for the arts to take part.

Outcomes from ‘First steps’

All participants are supported to reflect, discover and identify their own abilities and strengths. Participants are then encouraged to record these strengths and abilities in a range of ways of their own choosing.

Examples of this could include writing self-penned poetry or making hand-made pictures / crafts, created as part of the arts-based activities. It may not be arts-based and may simply be a short list or a brief written account. The choice remains with the young person.

The physical asset the young person creates might be used as a reflective tool to remind them how they feel about themselves or possible to communicate their abilities/strengths with others

How is ‘First steps’ delivered?

The programmecan be delivered in one of two ways: in groups OR as a 1:1 activity. Activity can be flexible and tailored to respond to every learner’s needs and wishes.

The programmecan be flexible on dates and locations of where the activity can be delivered across the County
